Bord na Mona had operated up to 1300 kilometers of 3ft gauge railways. It is certain to be less than this now, with some of the systems rationalised, and the older power stations now closed, but even so, the systems are still huge. In addition to Bord na Mona, there were several private peat firms which used narrow gauge railways, both in southern Ireland, and Northern Ireland.
