Whim Moss

Whim Moss was one of 3 sites that were still served by a 2ft gauge railway operated by William Sinclair Horticulture in 2007. At thuis time the management considered that the site would be winding up by 2009, but in the event the site lasted a little longer.

Doris is seen here in May 2007, wating for the last of the wagons to be tipped before heading out over the moss once again. With a rebuilt cab and engine cover, only the buffer block and frames identify the loco as a Ruston LBU class.

In the yard the tracks run up onto a tipping trestle which emptied the peat for a waiting dumper truck. The peat was stockpiled in the yard until lorries came to transport it elsewhere for milling.

The terminus was just a simple run round loop, with the wagons hand pushed on and off the tippler.

Looking away from the terminus, the railway follows the right hand side of a rough dirt road towards the working area of the peat moor.

Elouise, the Motor Rail comes back into the loop with another short train.

At the end of the runround loop the driver throws the point to bring the loco onto the other track to couple up to the empty wagons.

An overall view of the tipping dock and yard.

A few years previously Motor Rail MR22253 (assumed) was seen at the head of a train being loaded on the moors.

The year before in 1995, there was no activity, with the Alan Keef loco seen here, and the Motor Rail both on the tipping dock out of use for many months.
