Brad to Criscior

An industrial railway running from Brad to Criscior served a power station at Criscior. Although now approximately 5km in length, it was a surviving section of a longer railway which at one time boasted a passenger service. When coal transportaton finished, the railway and workshops were purchased privately and today occasional tourist/enthusiast trains are run.

The line had one of the standard BoBo L45h diesels, but also an eight coupled loco LD764-314. This is seen in the Brad exchange sidings on the 27th May 1993.

In Brad the coal wagons were filled by an elevator.

The loco sheds and maintenance facilities wee in the Criscior Pwer Station. Inside the shed at this time there was only the Ld45H diesel, with the 4coupled LD764 out working. The lines was well known for its continiued use of steam power, but at this time there was just the one steam loco on site.

0-8-0T Criscior No.4 (Resita 1315) was in working order, but the diesels were used if diesel fuel was available. A second steam loco No.8 was in the back of the shed receiving repairs.

On a second visit, as part of a organised tour in June 1998, Criscior No.8 was back on the line and in steam.

For a good part of the length after leaving Brad, the line ran alongside a small country road. As can be seen from the contents of the wagons, the coal was appalling quality.

Heating pipes running on concrete pillars ran alonside the railway for some distance, here seen just arriving at the power station.

Another view of the loco sheds, with both steam locos in view.

Criscior No.4 seen in good condition 5 years before was now in the siding next to the sheds, out of use.

Date: June 1998

On the Criscior site there as a small sawmill and a handworked narrow gauge track ran into the building to move the timber in and out.
